Saul Chan Htoo Sang (b. 1998) is an independent filmmaker from Yangon, belonging to the Chin\/Zo indigenous people in highland Myanmar\/Burma. In 2017, he studied Ethnographic & Media Studies, an independent major that approached documentation through multidisciplinary practices at Grinnell College in Iowa, USA. In 2020 and 2022, Wathann Film Festival in Myanmar and Independent Cinema Office in the UK respectively screened his first documentary film, \u2018Underneath My Chin\u2019. Starting in 2022, Saul began working for YOYAMAY Myanmar, an ethnographic textile gallery founded by his parents. Currently, Saul is working as a freelance filmmaker for local film and art organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

In Chin Indigenous practices, textiles act as guides in the afterlife. When a person dies, their family buries them along with their most beautiful cloth in hopes that their spirits do not linger with the living. This film references this burial practice as it is in conversation with the airstrikes in Myanmar, particularly the Pazigyi massacre. In essence, this work is a prayer to allow for the innocent souls to rest in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

reveals the obscure process in which modernity affects nature. Emerging out of a close collaboration between ghOstMiSt (Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena & Dewa Ayu Eka Putri) and Saul Chan Htoo Sang, this video art serves as an omen for the contemporary world. On this metaphorical stage, the alter ego of Saul (Zo) consumes the spirit of nature (Ayu) in an improvised contemporary dance as Putu’s avant-garde Gamlean music provides the liminal space for these two spirits to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
